Signing a digital document means linking to the document a signatory who can be identified with certainty.

Using a cryptographic procedure, electronic signatures guarantee:

  • the integrity of the signed document
  • the identity of the signatory
  • the non-repudiation by the signatory of the signed document

An electronic signature is, for a digital document, the equivalent of a handwritten signature. Under Directive 1999/93/EC of the European Parliament and of the council of 13 December 1999, it can have the same legal value as a handwritten signature.
